かん袋は、鎌倉時代末期、元徳元年〈西暦１３２９年）に和泉屋徳兵衛が和泉屋という商号で御餅司の店を開いたのが始まりです。 　安土桃山時代に、豊臣秀吉が大阪城を築城したときに、堺の商人納屋衆へ多額の寄付を要求しました。文禄二年（西暦１５９３年）の春中頃、桃山御殿が完成したのを機会に、秀吉は寄付金の礼として堺の商人納屋衆を招きました。 その時、天守閣は瓦を葺く工事中でした。暑い日盛りの下で、蟻が餌を運ぶように職人が一枚一枚瓦を運び上げていました。この様子を見た和泉屋徳左衛門は、容易に片付かないと思い、毎日奉仕に出かけ、餅作りで鍛えた腕力を使い、瓦を取っては次から次へと屋根の上に放り上げました。 瓦は春風に煽られて、紙袋が舞い散るように屋根に上がり、そこに居合わせた人々は、度肝を抜かれました。 これを見た秀吉が、「かん袋が散る様に似ている」と、その腕の強さを称え、「以後かん袋と名付けよ」と命じ、それより「かん袋」が、和泉屋の商号になりました。

くるみ餅のできた頃 　室町時代の中頃には、堺の町は明（当時の中国）との勘合貿易の港として栄えていました。 五代目の主人、和泉屋忠兵衛は、明より入荷した農作物を利用して、塩味で挽き合わし、茶菓子を作り出しました。 お餅をくるんで食べるところから「くるみ餅」と名付けました。 その後、ルソン（当時のフィリピン）から砂糖が輸入され、甘味が加えられ現在のくるみ餅となりました。

氷くるみ餅 　明治時代になり、製氷技術が輸入され、氷が簡単に作られるようになると、かき氷をかけて食べられるようになりました。それが、「氷くるみ餅」です。 当時から、夏になりますと、涼感を求めて大勢のお客様が、お店に行列を作るようになりました。　 　　　　　　　　　　二十七代　かん袋主人　敬白

The history The origin dated back to the year of 1329 at the end of Kamakura period when Tokubei Izumiya opened a mochi (or rice cake)shop named IZUMIYA in Sakai. After entering Aduchimomoyama period, the then samurai leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi required Sakai merchants for a large amount of donation to build Osaka Castle. He invited them to the tour of the construction site of Osaka Castle as a token of his gratitude in the spring of 1593. Tokuzaemon was one of them and he saw many men forming in a human chain from the ground to the roof top passing a clay roof tile from hand to hand. He found it time-consuming work and decided to go to the castle every day to help them. He was a mochi maker and boasted of himself as a Hercules. So he started throwing a roof tile one after another to the top alone. The roof tiles thrown by him were like paper bags being whirled up by the spring wind. The people around him including Hideyoshi were astonished to see him doing that. Hideyoshi praised his enormous power by giving his shop the name,"Paper Bag", or "Kambukuro" in Japanese. HIs shop has been called "Kambukuro" ever since. The first Kurumimochi It was originally salty snack created by the first owner, Chubei Izumiya, around 1420 when Sakai flourished as a port trade with Ming China. He created a new type of snack served with tea by using some food imported from Ming. He named it Kurumimochi, which meant wrapped mochi in Japanese, since it was mochi wrapped with salty paste. It changed to the current sweet one after sugar began being imported from Luzon Island later. Kurumimochi with shaved ice Kurumimochi topped with shaved ice was started during Meiji period after the freezing technique was imported and ice making became very easy in Japan. Ever after, Kurumimochi with shaved ice has been very popular and the long line of waiting people eager to get a sense of coolness has been often found in front of the shop, especially in summer. 　　　　　　　　　　　　27th Store owner Yours truly
